General:

I have extensive technical experience through many aspects of the Information and Communications Technology industry from more than 20 years involvement, from programming, general PC support, Server administration, Network administration, purchasing and project implementation.

Outside of my current employment my involvement in a number of organizations and committees has given me leadership and management experience from small teams working in demanding environments such as Search and Rescue and Civil Defence, through chairing national committees and being the President or Leader of local organisations.

Work Experience:

Mar.89- Jul.07 :-

Datacom Software Research Ltd/Trimble Navigation New Zealand Ltd:

Programmer/PC Support Manager/Network Systems Manager

While I was employed by Datacom Software Research / Trimble Navigation New Zealand I had a number of positions starting with a mix of programming and PC/Network support, which grew more specialised in the Network Support area as the company has grown.

My position was Network Systems Manager, and involves the management and control of the network servers used in the company, and the networks they are connected to.

The network had evolved from being based on Proteon's Pronet-10 token ring topology to Ethernet, Fast-Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet. I implemented a number of network designs based on 3COM managed hubs and switches and used their Transcend network management software. I was also involved in migrating to Cisco network switches in a move toward enterprise compatibility with our corporate offices in America and I had worked on the initial design and migration of the network. I had also previously been responsible for the Wide Area Network to our corporate HQ in California, a Frame Relay network initially on 3COM Routers, which moved to using Cisco routers. I was responsible for the day to day operation of the local area network and solving any problems in that operation. Other aspects of the network environment I had been responsible for include the Shiva remote access system for dial-in users. I also maintained a small group of Wireless Access Points for wireless access to our corporate network.

The network administration includes administration of a number of Windows Servers, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003, user administration, and installation and support of all software on the network servers. I was the administrator for an Active Directory Child domain within a global Active Directory environment, and was involved as a part of the team administering the global enterprise level AD Domain. The main Windows File servers were mainly Compaq/HP Proliant rack mount servers, and a mix of Cyclone computers for smaller specialised functions. I made extensive use of Compaq Insight Manager/HPSIM and network management tools for monitoring these systems.

I was also responsible for the setup, management and disaster recovery provisioning for the Microsoft Exchange Server, starting with Exchange 4, and migrating through 5.5, 2000 and 2003, which also runs on one of the Compaq/HP Proliant Windows 2000 servers. This includes maintaining a standby server for disaster recovery provisions. Other projects have included the setup of Windows Terminal Servers, installation of MS SQL Servers, installation of IIS and Apache Web Servers on Windows. I was also responsible for the backup and disaster recovery of all data on the servers, using NTBackup and Arcserve, using a combination of stand-alone and Arrays of DLT Tape drives and SDLT Robotic tape libraries.

I also planned and implemented the initial setup of small servers and routers to connect a number of our smaller offices around the pacific basin, including AD Domain Controllers and file servers in Brisbane, Beijing, and Singapore to the Corporate Network, and on-going support of these offices.

I am familiar with IIS and web hosting on Linux servers. I worked with IIS 5 and Xerox DocuShare for a Knowledge base project for our customer support group. I have also worked with IIS 6, and Apache for other web based applications.

Previously we used Novell Netware 2.x and 3.x, so I have considerable experience with these, but minimal experience with version 4 and above.

Over the years I have also been responsible for end user support of workstations including DOS, Windows 3.x Windows 9x, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP, but this is now only a small part of my work. Most workstations on the network are high end Pentium 4 PC Compatibles with top level video subsystems and up to 2Gbytes of RAM. I also assist with the administration of a number of small Unix systems and their networking and inter-networking with the Windows network environment.

I have in the past been responsible for purchasing of hardware and software for use within the company, including dealings with the following vendors and distributors:

Cyclone Computers, Dove Electronics, Datacom Systems, New Technologies, Interconnect, Compaq, Melco Sales, Microsoft, Computerland, Tech Pacific, and many others.

This is now reduced to mainly dealing with suppliers specifically for the network and server hardware and software.

The position initially also included some programming. This included programming in ADL, a Forth like threaded language for embedded systems, for hand-held data collectors. Other programming includes support utilities, and network utilities in Pascal, and C. I also do a lot of documentation using HTML for our Intranet site.

While in this position I have completed the following training/certification:

Feb.88-Mar.89 :-

Tait Electronics Limited: CAD Computer Specialist.

This position involved aspects of a position of System Programmer, System Administrator, and System Operator. I was responsible for the overall operation of an IBM System 370 mainframe (IBM 4361 and NAS 6630) for the Engineering Computer Aided Design System. I was involved in small amounts of programming, mostly to format data and reports for different sections of the company, and in the control and application of software updates for the Operating System, other system software, and the two major CAD applications. I was responsible for maintaining backups of all data and to oversee general operation procedures. I was also charged with dealing with hardware and software vendors for upgrades, maintenance and support. Other functions included systems performance monitoring, analysis and tuning and capacity planning.

While in this position I attended IBM courses on VM installation and Transition from VM Rel 4 to Rel 5.

Interests:

My interests include electronics and radio. I am an amateur radio operator (ham radio operator) and a member of the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters (NZART). From this stems my interest in data communications, I have been involved at the committee level for the local Branch of NZART for 12 years including terms as Secretary and President, and was a national councilor for the Association for 8 years. I am also the deputy section leader for the Christchurch Amateur Radio Emergency Communications group, also having served as Section Leader for a term. This sees me heavily involved in emergency communications support for Civil Defence and Search and Rescue. As well as these emergency services we provide safety communications for sporting groups such as the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Jet Boat River Racing Association and events such as the Speight's Coast to Coast.

My involvement in Search and Rescue sees me currently in positions including a member of the Management Committee for the Canterbury Land Search and Rescue District, a member of the New Zealand Land Search and Rescue Inc (NZLSAR) Region 6 committee, the chairman of the NZLSAR Communications and Technology National Sub-Committee, and a member of the NZLSAR National Committee. I have also been involved with coordination of Search and Rescue training at the District and Regional level, and in presenting Search and Rescue training relating to Radio Communications, GPS and Computers.

I was also involved at the committee level of the local Netware Users Group while it was active (some years ago now). I am a full member of the New Zealand Computer Society.

In the last 18 months I have also been involved with Scouting as a Scout Leader, and been involved in the management of the Scout Group and attended various training as a leader.

I am also interested in the World Wide Web as a means of publication for non-profit organisations, and links from my home page show pages that I work on for organisations that I am involved with.

I have attended a wide range of training and gained a number of qualifications and certifications out side of my normal work, see additional document for details.

Please contact me if you have any further queries.
